Winter of Sorrow                                   Summer of Hope

The statue of Crucified Woman has graced the grounds of Victoria University since 1986. On May 14–15, 2010, we will gather to honour the many faces of Crucified Woman as we explore together the hopes and passions she continually evokes. We invite submissions on this topic in any creative media, including poetry, art, theatre, film, and dance for performances and displays.

Some poems will be chosen for publication by a selection committee consisting of the Very Rev. Dr. Lois Wilson and Professors Emerita Alexandra F. Johnston and Johan Aitken. Selection criteria will be purely aesthetic and will not include any restrictions on theme. A Christian interpretation is not required. In fact, we invite a diversity of interpretations and experiences.

Guest speakers at the conference will include Doris Jean Dyke, author of Crucified Woman (United Church Publishing House, 1991); Marjory Noganosh, Ojibwe elder and energy therapist at Anishnawbe Health Toronto; and Pat Capponi, writer, advocate, and activist for homelessness, poverty, and/or mental health issues with Voices From the Street; among others.

Please submit poems or proposals by 15 January 2010, either by e-mail to Margaret Burgess

at m.burgess@utoronto.ca or by mail to Janet Ritch at Victoria University,

73  Queen’s Park Crescent, Toronto, Ontario M5S 1K7.
