FORWARD Health Circles and Housing Rights Patricia Diaz
Mar 3rd, 2010 | By Patricia Cummings-Diaz | Category: Campaigns (incl.) Grassroots, Community Board, Community Resource, HousingThe Health Circles will be complete by the end of March and the women are interested in writing a report from the grid. Anyone who is or had daily-lived experiences of homelessness and under housing are more than welcome to give your voice to this document.
One of our speakers at the Circles was Tracy Heffernan who is working on the Charter of Rights for housing challenge. What became apparent in the Circles was the lack of info about housing rights. The Tenant School will provide an excellent opportunity to get all your questions answered. Please use the flyer to pass out or post in your drop-in or work place. Tracy is also asking for 1 page stories of housing experiences for her case. Please pass around this info also.
On March 7th and 8th Doreen Silversmith and I have been given the opportunity to go to a 2 day event in Ottawa for the planning stages of the Women’s World Conference that will be held in July of 2011. This will be the largest women’s conference in our history so keep it in mind. I’ll send any updates to keep you in touch.
The road will rise up to meet you.

TENANT SCHOOL
where tenants find out what they need to know about the law
Dear Toronto Community Housing Tenant,
Have you ever wondered what legal rights TCHC tenants have? How rent is calculated and when it can be increased or decreased, or when a subsidy can be cut-off and how to appeal those decisions? Do you want to know how to effectively get repairs done? Have you ever wondered about the eviction process and what can be done to protect tenancies?
Do you want to get more involved in your community? Do you want to learn how to bring people together to advocate for change? Do you want to know what supports and resources are available to you and your fellow tenants? Then, Tenant School is for YOU!
Staff from community legal clinics and the Federation of Metro Tenants’ Associations, with the support of the Law Foundation of Ontario, will be holding Tenant School, a series of 5 workshops covering these important topics. There will be one workshop per week, on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, from April 8 to May 6, 2010 at OISE. Please see the attached poster for details.
All sessions are free and preference will be given to tenants who can attend all 5 sessions. Assistance with the cost of transportation is available for those who require it.
For more information and to register for these workshops, please call
416-438-7206 or email scarclw@lao.on.ca . Please register before March 29, 2010.
We look forward to seeing you there!
