| Opal S. | I was born in Toronto. I am the 2nd of seven children. By the time I was seven, my mother was a single mother. I’ve lived in several neighborhoods throughout Toronto. I learned from my mother how to bake bread, make pies, cook on a wood coal stove, knitting, sewing, weaving, and some basic survival skills. I am glad to have been born in Toronto. My interests are food security, community gardening, advocating to improve the quality of life for ALL, and providing dignified services for marginalized persons. |

| Cynthia R. | 25 years ago I embarked on a journey of homelessness fleeing from an abusive man with my 3 yr. old daughter. There were no supports in place then for a Jewish abused mother because “nothing of that sort occurred in that community.” The road has been long and I have changed many policies with regards to safety and housing. I am a consumer/survivor as well as a breast cancer survivor for 2 years now. Poverty is not conducive to my healing. The one thing that’s come from all of this is that I cannot be silenced by the powers that be. I’ll always continue to blaze the trail of change until the oppression no longer exists. |
